What are Ethernet Services?

Ethernet services are flexible, easy-to-use, layer 2 connectivity options that use established Ethernet transport technology. They allow customers to connect multiple enterprise locations within a service area using the native Ethernet protocol. Ethernet services supports transmission speeds as low as 10 Mb/s and up to 10 Gb/s, either in increments of 10 Mb/s from 10 to 100 Mb/s, in increments of 100 Mb/s from 100 to 1000 Mb/s, and in increments of 1 Gb/s from 1 Gb/s to 10 Gb/s. This allows for flexible growth and permits the customer to choose a bandwidth profile that fits their real traffic needs. Awasr Ethernet services offers customers 2 options; Metro Ethernet and, Ethernet over GPON
• Metro Ethernet provides point to point, point to multipoint, and multipoint to multipoint connectivity between locations over dedicated access infrastructure. It supports service speeds of 10Mb/s to 10Gb/s.
• Ethernet over GPON provides point to point, point to multipoint, and multipoint to multipoint connectivity between locations over shared access infrastructure. It supports service speeds of 10Mb/s to 1000Mb/s.

What is the difference between Metro Ethernet and Ethernet over GPON services?

Ethernet over GPON is Awasr’s Ethernet service delivered over the GPON network (as opposed to Metro Ethernet that is delivered through dedicated P2P fiber optics link). It has the same features as the Metro Ethernet service, but slightly lower availability targets (99.5% for Ethernet over GPON, and 99.9% for Metro Ethernet).

Which organizations are Ethernet services suitable for?

The services are most suitable to private companies and public institutions with multiple locations requiring high bandwidth, security and/or continuity in their business. Many companies from various sectors such as public, banking & finance, health, education, tourism, logistics, oil & gas, services, and construction, can benefit from state-of-the-art Ethernet services to increase productivity.

What Ethernet service types does Awasr support?

Our service supports the E-line and E-LAN service types as defined by the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum). The E-line service type can be used to construct point-to-point (P2P) and point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connectivity solutions. The E-LAN service type can be used to construct multipoint-to-multipoint (MP2MP) solutions.

What standards are Awasr Ethernet services compliant with?

Ethernet services are compliant with the current Ethernet standard (IEEE 802.3-2005), and support other related standards, such as IEEE 802.1D-2004 (MAC Bridges), IEEE 802.1Q-2005 (VLAN Bridges), etc. In addition, our products are modeled after the Carrier Ethernet standards as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF). The MEF develops technical specifications and implementation agreements to promote interoperability and deployment of carrier-class Ethernet services worldwide.

What service options do Awasr’s Ethernet product offer?

We offer four service options: Ethernet Private Line (EPL), Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL), Ethernet Private LAN (EP-LAN) and Ethernet Virtual Private LAN (EVP-LAN). EPL is typically used instead of a legacy Private Line service such as TDM service, while EVPL is typically used at a hub or aggregation site where multiple EVCs are multiplexed in to a single UNI. EP-LAN and EVP-LAN options are applicable when any-to-any connectivity is required and are typically used in place of legacy transparent LAN services or when contemporary Layer 2 VPNs are required, to name a few.

What is the difference between the "private" service options (EPL and EP-LAN) and the "virtual" service options (EVPL and EVP-LAN)?

A “private” service provides a single Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) per Ethernet interface. This means all customer ingress traffic is mapped to a single EVC and transported through the Awasr Metro Ethernet Network (MEN) to a single destination Ethernet interface (EPL) or to multiple destination Ethernet interfaces (EP-LAN). A “virtual” service provides one or more EVCs per Ethernet interface. This means portions of customer ingress traffic are mapped to multiple EVCs and transported through the Awasr MEN to a single destination Ethernet interface (EVPL) or to multiple destination Ethernet interfaces (EVP-LAN). Which portions of customer traffic are mapped to which EVC is determined by the customer “tagging” their traffic with customer VLAN IDs.

Does Awasr’s Ethernet services support the IEEE 802.1Q standard?

Yes. Our service supports the reception of untagged (1518 bytes) and VLAN tagged/priority tagged (1522 bytes) Ethernet Service Frames (ESFs).

Where is Awasr’s Ethernet service available?

Awasr is able to provide Ethernet services across its existing footprint of Awasr’s fibre optic network in Muscat, and Salalah. We are also able to explore options and provide connectivity to locations not currently covered by the footprint of Awasr’s fibre optic network.

How does Awasr‘s Ethernet service perform traffic differentiation?

Real Time	Supports applications that require minimal loss, are latency-sensitive and require low latency variation (jitter), including voice and video. This class is configured for strict priority queuing allowing latency sensitive traffic to be sent first.
Interactive	Supports high-priority business data applications such as financial transactions, remote access (Citrix) or storage or jitter-sensitive applications, such as voice and video.
Business Critical	Supports most business data applications with moderate tolerance for delay and which are less sensitive to jitter.
Non-Critical	Supports low priority business applications with more tolerance for delay and availability, such as file transfers, email and web browsing.

Does Awasr provide Service Level Agreement for the Ethernet services?

Yes. The complete set of SLA performance objectives for all four performance parameters, i.e. Frame Delay (FD), Inter Frame Delay Variation (IFDV), Frame Loss Ratio (FLR) and Availability, of each CoS name is given bellow. There are two Performance Tiers (set of performance metrics), each with different objective targets are defined, based on distance and access type.
